1. Explain the following terms:

(a) Continent

Answer:

  • A continent is a large continuous expanse of land on the Earth.
  • Continents together form the major landmasses of the world.
  • There are seven commonly accepted continents:
    • Asia
    • Africa
    • North America
    • South America
    • Europe
    • Australia
    • Antarctica
  • Continents differ in size, climate, population, and natural features.
  • Asia is the largest continent, while Australia is the smallest continent.

(b) Ocean

Answer:

  • Oceans are the largest water bodies found on the Earth.
  • Nearly three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, which makes Earth appear as the “Blue Planet.”
  • The five major oceans are:
    • Pacific Ocean
    • Atlantic Ocean
    • Indian Ocean
    • Arctic Ocean
    • Southern Ocean
  • Oceans regulate climate and support marine life.
  • They play an important role in rainfall, trade, transport, and fishing.

(c) Island

Answer:

  • An island is a piece of land surrounded by water on all sides.
  • Islands are smaller than continents.
  • There are lakhs of islands across the world.
  • Greenland is the largest island in the world.
  • India has two major island groups:
    • Andaman and Nicobar Islands
    • Lakshadweep Islands

2. Let us draw – Without looking at the maps in this chapter, draw the continents free hand on a sheet of paper and colour them. Then compare your drawing with the map of oceans and continents in the chapter.

  • Draw the outline of the seven continents on a blank sheet.
  • Label all the continents clearly:
